dog information - mans best friendIt is undeniable that man’s best friend in the animal kingdom is the canine. What is little understood and rarely talked about is why dog breeds all came about in the first place. What dog information do we think we know today?

A widely accepted theory today claims that wolves were domesticated by hunter gathers over thousands of years before agriculture and permanent human settlements.  Domestication of the dog is thought to have been a selective trait process through breeding and dog training over hundreds of generations.

With human and canines both being hunter gathers and family oriented it is not really that unusual for the two species to co-exist. The relationship may very well be that the two species after living together over thousands of years have influenced the genetic qualities of each other. It may be true that people would have picked selective traits in a dog, but the dogs also influence the traits of people through performance. In essence people were more likely to survive with dogs than without.

We believe that once dogs were domesticated, human societies used dogs help enrich their lives. By selective breeding and dog training these hunter gather societies were able to better protect, feed and service the needs of their communities. This in turn created a very diverse group of canine family which we refer to today as dog breeds.

Without question, man and dogs co-existence is truly a success story that is still evolving to this day. It appears today that the journey has not ended, nor should it. I believe today in most parts of the world we are less likely to under estimate the value of dogs in our culture. We are more likely to give dogs credit for the important role they play in the evolution of life on this planet. Therefore as humans it is reasonable to assume that our role is also to provide and protect those that have so greatly enriched our lives.

Man and his best friend the canine have a unique bond that goes back many thousands of years. For those interested in learning more about dogs we have more, much more information about dogs at our dog information blog.
